Learn to Avoid the Burn

Summer Sun Tips

It’s summertime, and everyone’s looking forward to fun days in the sun! Catching a few rays can be relaxing and feel great, but it’s essential to consider summer skin protection.

Industrial work can be hard on the body by itself. Adding the sun to this equation and the results can be damaging in more ways than one. Knowing how to keep yourself hydrated and your skin protected can be a lifesaver during those middle months of the year.

Here are a few tips on summer skin protection:

First things first, stay hydrated!

Water is vital for everyone, as it keeps the skin healthy and the body moving. During the summer months, it’s especially crucial to avoid dehydration. Your body tends to sweat more during this time in an attempt to cool itself, causing you to lose the necessary fluids that keep your body functioning smoothly.

How much water one consumes per day depends on the individual. Harvard Health Publishing says the minimum requirement is 4 to 6 cups daily. Be sure to understand all of your health risks and necessities related to hydration, and always consult your doctor with any questions!

Next, the CDC suggests limiting sun exposure.

No, this doesn’t mean avoiding the outdoors entirely. After spending much of the past winter months indoors, many of us are dying to go outside! The CDC wants us to stay safe while doing so. For this purpose, they suggest three precautions: staying in shaded areas, wearing clothing that protects your skin, and protecting your eyes at all times. These options can help lower the risk of skin damage, skin cancer, eye damage, and other dangers from the sun.

Always wear sunscreen.

The CDC suggests using at least 15 SPF at all times, as this will provide some protection to your skin. You’ll also have to be sure to reapply throughout the day because sunscreen wears off. Be sure to find a product that works well with your skin, as various brands can affect skin types differently.

Be aware of your surroundings.

Environmental factors such as snow, water, and sand reflect the sun’s rays, emphasizing their ability to damage. The EPA says this can cause sunburn, increasing your chances of dehydration. If you know you’ll be around any of these conditions, wear sunscreen containing over 15 SPF to counter the effects.

Always check the expected UV Index daily.

Doing so can help you plan your daily activities to stay safe. Both the National Weather Service and the EPA broadcast this forecast daily online. Knowing the impending heat and sun exposure can help prevent unnecessary damage.

Protecting your skin, eyes, and body from the sun is always important. These few tips can make a huge difference. Be sure to educate yourself on the effects of sun damage and what you can do to prevent these sometimes permanent outcomes.

Dump Your Worries on Ledwell!

Ledwell Dump Truck Family

A dump truck is a dump truck. They all, well, dump?

Not exactly.

Picking your equipment depends on the machines’ function and the material you’re moving. All Ledwell Dump Trucks are built for hauling a range of heavy materials, and each piece has its purpose.

We manufacture multiple styles, including; box, demolition, flatbed, lumber, and trash dumps, all of which have a specific solution for a particular problem.

American Manufactured Dump Truck by Ledwell

Box and Tub Dumps are designed for hauling heavy job-site materials, but they differ.

A Box Dump body has a square interior and comes in multiple weight configurations. Our three most popular sizes are three to four-yard, five to six-yard, and 12 to 14-yard capacities. This dump style is for quickly dumping materials, such as dirt, gravel, or other loose items.

Tub Dumps, also known as Demolition Trucks, have rounded body interiors which helps certain materials clear the unit quickly. It speeds up unloading time and produces a cleaner shed of materials. Its lower center of gravity ensures that hauling heavier items is done with strength and stability.

Both are viable options, but it’s essential to understand everything you need going into a job to pick the right product. For example, if your materials are saturated, it might be better to go with a Tub Dump so the materials will slide out effortlessly.

durable Ledwell dump truck for construction

Even our Trash Dump looks much like our Box Dump, but as the name suggests, it’s designed specifically for waste materials.

The bed is elongated to carry more materials, and the doors swing out like barn doors instead of up. The walls of the body stand taller than that of the box dump to ensure that your debris, or other materials, are secure.

These beds might be better for large amounts of lightweight materials, such as leaves or paper.

Our Flatbed and Lumber Dumps are a departure from the popular Dump Truck shape, providing a versatile solution to haul pallets of materials and supplies with the bonus of dumping lumber and rebar right off the back. The removable sideboards also allow you to transport small quantities of dirt and gravel.

Both can be built in many different ways, lengths, and functions and are capable of heavy hauling of similar materials. Still, the body build depends entirely on the job and material.

If you aren’t sure which type of Dump Truck fits your application, call us. We would be happy to find a solution for your situation and get you rolling in the right direction!

Agriculture: Growing Technology For Feed Mill

Ledwell customer Pilgrim's Nashville opens new feed mill

What does it take to keep your family happy and healthy? There are many possible answers to this question, but one answer is nutritious food.

It would be best to have grocery store shelves stocked with everything their growing bodies need to thrive. Fresh fruit, fresh grains, fresh beef, and poultry.

Timing and efficiency are essential to the Agriculture Industry to keep stores stocked. Without that, the market might not have fully stocked shelves for tonight’s dinner.

Every day, companies are working on new technologies to enhance the experience of all things within the world around us.

This is all with the intent of bettering lives globally. The Feed Industry is no exception.

Without a feed mill, we wouldn’t have mass animal feed production that ultimately results in worldwide food production.

Because this is such a crucial part of life, it’s important to reach new heights consistently. One of our customers, Pilgrim’s, recently underwent a massive upgrade to their Nashville facility. Their feed mill keeps up with changing technologies, times, and the customer wants and needs.

In reality, they are working towards a happier consumer experience at all levels. New programs and tools that increase tons per hour, cubic feet per hour, bushels per hour, and so on.

Improved production at their feed mill helps them get to the result faster – a fed state.

C-O-Woah!: How You Can Reduce Carbon Emissions

How to Reduce CO2 for Truck Drivers

What if we didn’t have truck drivers? Where would Amazon be today? How would farm fresh get to so many different tables? How would we experience cultural similarities and differences right here at home in such a short amount of time? We need truck drivers and large transportation vehicles to make our world go round. According to the American Trucking Association (AMA), “Trucks deliver 100 percent of all consumer products and 70 percent of all freight tonnage.” But, this doesn’t mean we can’t also be conscious of our environment and the things we can do to promote a thriving, healthy world economically and safely. It’s no secret that trucks can put out Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions that harm our trees, crops, and selves. However, the solution doesn’t have to be ridding the world of vehicular travel. It’s actually much, much more doable than that. It’s a matter of being aware of the ways we can save money and the planet while still truckin’ along!

Programs developed by organizations and the Government are already taking action to reduce carbon footprints via better engines, filters and so on. The question is though, what can you do to minimize your carbon emissions? Well, the AMA, AAA, and the US Government say lots of things! Here are six tips for reducing emissions on the road:

When planning your route, take the most direct one.
Not only will this save you time, but it also saves you money on fuel and other necessary resources. Cutting mileage cuts fuel use, which results in better financial results and less CO2 in the air that we breath.

Make sure tires are properly inflated.
Improper PSI can alter your gas mileage, resulting in more costs and more emissions. When your tire isn’t meeting inflation standards, your vehicle has to work harder to achieve its proper performance.

Always replace dirty air filters.
This will make sure that your air flow is not blocked. Just like in your home, this can lower your costs by eliminating excess work for your equipment and lowering gas mileage rates.

Make sure spark plugs are properly maintained.
This will ensure a proper combustion cycle, meaning that your cylinders fuel will run its course as it should, instead of running through without burning. There are even specific, more fuel efficient plugs on the market!

Ensure engine oil is always up to date and the correct type.
Simply put, changing your engines oil keeps your vehicle running efficiently. It ensures proper lubrication, cooling and more.

Be mindful of your driving technique.
Angry-type driving raises CO2 emissions. When you slam on the gas, breaks, or speed, you’re raising your fuel usage. By reducing these actions while driving, you’ll lower your emissions as well as your cost for fuel.
In short, these are very easy things that anyone can do, and should be doing. Not only are they good for reducing CO2 emissions, but they are also more cost effective and promote better equipment maintenance and safety.

Taking the Lead

Steve Ledwell & Ledwell Team

Ledwell has undergone some major accomplishments in the span of its life. For example, last November, Texarkana College built and dedicated a new workforce building on their campus to Betty and Buddy Ledwell. This was in major part due to the community-wide need for experienced and educated workforce members. The college offers classes for construction, electronics, electrical and industrial maintenance programs. Helping to shape the future workforce to gain valuable skills is beneficial to not only the students but the organizations in the community who will hire those individuals. In their June Issue, Rental Management acknowledge the company for their community efforts, spanning between its launch in 1946 and now. Your local network matters, and it takes a combined effort to support and nurture it. To learn more about Texarkana community events, follow us on social media, or visit gotxk.org.

Wine in the Pines

Texarkana Wine Festival

What’s one thing to be treasured about a town with enthusiastic, motivated people? They get the job done, and they do it for anyone in need. The thing about the Texarkana community is that they’re always willing to come together for a good cause, and they always make it a good time. For five years now, Texarkana’s Alzheimer’s Alliance Tri-State Area has put together an elegant, but fun filled festival at Spring Lake Park- Jive for Five Twice as Fine Wine! As usual, the festival took place on the first Saturday of May this year (May 4th) and proved to be an artist, foodie, and wine enthusiast day of delight, with all proceeds benefiting Alzheimer’s Alliance.

The greatest thing about the wine festival is its aptitude for bringing different tastes together and introducing new elements to the people of town. This year, 26 wineries from all over Texas and a series of local restaurants and creatives wowed the crowd with their selections of art. Supporting and experiencing our communities talents is a necessary goal anyone should have. For the town to thrive, the individuals must thrive and that’s why events like this one are so important – not to mention that all of the earnings went to a good cause in support of those local friends.

Ledwell manufactured Water Truck spraying

The impending dry season means more dust, dirt, and heat all around. What you need is a Water Truck – but not just any water truck, a Ledwell Water Truck. Our equipment is built to your custom needs, size and all, but Ledwell also offers a few standard features. All our trucks have lined interiors designed to prevent rusting and corrosion. We use a coating thickness of up to 20 millimeters, ensuring your unit longevity. They all also come with three fill options (top fill, hose fill, or hydrant fill) and in-cab air controls.

But we know that you don’t always need the ‘standard’ equipment. That’s why we offer a wide range of interchangeable options for you. A couple of these consist of our sparger bars and water cannon. With these, you can extend the range of your water blasts and increase reach, output and ability. These custom-made options are great for a wide range of applications, from race tracks to street cleaning. Our sparger bars come in various configurations and placement options – either stationary or folding on the front and rear side of your water truck.

But, if you’re looking for maneuverability and long reaching streams, you might want to see about our water cannons. The movement of this attachment is completely controlled by you with an in-cab joystick control and its upward placement atop the unit gives its output the gift of distance.

Some of this equipment might be new to you, and that’s okay! We’ve devised all new and improved operation manuals and videos that will walk you through working your new piece of equipment. You can find these on our website or by scanning the QR code on your Ledwell equipment. Also, be sure to visit our YouTube page and Facebook to stay in the loop on our latest and greatest!
